Siegfried Eschke

Siegfried Eschke (born October 11, 1933 in Chemnitz ) is a German former officer of the National People's Army (NVA) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), most recently in the rank of major general . From 1976 to 1990 he was general director of the armaments company VEB Kombinat Spezialtechnik in Dresden .

Life

Eschke, the son of an employee , learned the trade of telecommunications fitter in Leipzig from 1948 to 1952 and worked briefly in the profession. In 1949 he became a member of the Free German Youth (FDJ). In 1952 he began studying radio engineering at the Mittweida engineering school . After joining the German People's Police (DVP) on June 23, 1952, he was a student at the VP Officers' School in Kamenz until 1954 . From 1954 to 1955 he served as a radio engineer in the Bautzen office of the Barracked People's Police (KVP). Eschke joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1955 .

From 1955 to 1961 Eschke was an officer student at the military academy for engineers of the air force "Prof. NJ Zhukovsky ” in the Soviet Union . During this time he was accepted into the NVA in 1956. He was then from 1961 to 1963 senior officer for radio and radio measurement technology of the 3rd air defense division of the NVA . 1963/64 he was deputy head and head of the repair department, from 1964 in the rank of captain head of the VEB repair shop Pinnow .

In 1969/70 Eschke completed a special course at the "Bruno Leuschner" Berlin School of Economics (HfÖ) in Berlin. From 1971 he was 1st Deputy General Director and from 1976 to 1990 General Director of the armaments company VEB Kombinat Spezialtechnik in Dresden. Eschke was promoted to colonel in 1974 and appointed major general on October 3, 1984 by the Chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Erich Honecker . He was released from service on September 30, 1990.

On February 11, 1993, he said before the KoKo investigation committee in Bonn that the GDR Combine Special Technology Dresden had been completely disarmed and no longer produced war weapons. He was mainly responsible for repair work and had no knowledge of the sale of military equipment and weapons. On the other hand, the combine operation VEB Gerät- und Werkzeugbau Wiesa , which was subordinate to him, exported handguns to the NSW and even developed them specifically for this market (see Wieger ). The neighboring VEB Flugzeugwerft Dresden plant, which is also part of the combine, repaired combat aircraft for customers in NSW, for example for both warring parties during the Iraq-Iran war.
