Silmido is an uninhabited island in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of South Korea . Their area is approx. 0.25 km². It is located in the metropolitan area of Incheon and is about five kilometers southwest of Incheon Airport . It is located directly in front of the much larger, inhabited island of Muuido , which is connected to the mainland by a ferry.

The Silmido Incident

Silmido became historically relevant in the 1960s when it was used for a training area for an elite military unit that was supposed to assassinate the then North Korean leader Kim Il-sung . Remnants of the facility are still there. Under circumstances that have not yet been fully clarified, the members of the unit mutinied in 1971 and drove to Seoul , where they were killed or committed suicide.

Silmido is well known these days as the location of the 2003 film " Silmido ", which is loosely based on the Silmido incident. Thanks to the success of the film, the island has become a relatively well-known destination for tourists.
