Silverius (fantasy from the 17th century)

Silverius (* in? Frosinone , † 2 December 537 on Ponza ), son of Pope Hormisdas , was from June 536 until his resignation on November 11, 537 Pope . Like his father, he was probably born in Frosinone in Lazio or a neighboring town.

His pontificate was short and problematic from the start. The subdeacon encountered great reservations among the Roman clergy . After the death of Agapitus I, Theodora , the wife of the Eastern Roman emperor Justinian I , favored Vigilius , who was then living in Constantinople , as Pope , because she expected him to accept Monophysitism . Theodahad , the king of the Ostrogoths , on the other hand, did not want a Pope allied with Constantinople and enforced Silverius before Vigilius arrived in Rome .

In the same year Rome was occupied by the Eastern Roman general Belisarius and Silverius was banished to Patara in what is now Turkey in 537 for high treason . Vigilius took his place. Emperor Justinian soon allowed Silverius to return to Italy , but Vigilius banished him to the small island of Ponza in the Gulf of Gaeta or, according to other sources, to the neighboring island of Palmarola , where he died on December 2, 537. This day is his memorial day .
