The Simeto is a river in Sicily . It has a length of 113 km and is Sicily's second longest river after the Imera Meridionale .

Two source rivers ( Troina and Cutò ), which have their source in the Monti Nebrodi , meet 7 km northwest of Bronte and form the Simeto. This flows in a southerly direction past Adrano and Paterno and flows south of Catania into the Ionian Sea .

The Simeto is one of the few rivers in Sicily that does not dry out completely even in summer. The Piana di Catania plain , Sicily's largest plain and also the most fertile region of the island, was created when lava earth was washed up by the Simeto. The estuary of the river was placed under nature protection, as rare water birds nest here.
