Simon Bening , also Simon Bennik (* around 1483 in Bruges or Antwerp , † 1561 in Bruges ), was a Flemish miniature painter and illustrator . He is considered one of the most important artists in his field. He was the father of Levina Teerlinc .

Life

Bening was born the son of the miniature painter Alexander Bening (1444–1519) in Bruges. There he also learned the craft of a miniature painter in his father's workshop. From 1500 he began to work independently and in 1508 was accepted into the Bruges Illuminated Guild. However, he did not settle in Bruges until 1519, but lived and worked with his father, who died in 1519. During this time, when Simon was trained by his father, he got to know the work of other illuminators such as Gerard Horenbout , with whom he would later color in great manuscripts. By 1525 at the latest, Simon Bening was the undisputed “star” of the book painting scene in Europe.

plant

In 1530 the Portuguese diplomat and humanist Damião de Góis Bening called "the best master of book illustration in all of Europe". Paul Getty Museum ) and the "Da Costa Hours" (New York, Pierpoint) Morgan Library ), the genealogical tables of the royal houses of Spain and Portugal (London, British Library , Add. 12531), the Hennessy Book of Hours (Brussels, Royal Library , MS.
