Simon Georg Sina the Elder ( Greek Γεώργιος Σίνας ; * 1753 in Sarajevo , † 1822 in Vienna ) was a Greek-Austrian merchant. He opened Austria's foreign trade with the Ottoman Empire, which until then was almost insignificant.

biography

Sina came to Vienna with his family around 1800 and shortly afterwards began trading goods from the Ottoman Empire. Above all with tobacco. By 1810 he was the most important banker in Hungary, and in 1818 he was raised to the Hungarian nobility.

His place of residence and business was the Palais Sina at Hohen Markt No. 9 in Vienna, which was built shortly before by architect Andreas von Fellner . He bought the houses at Am Fleischmarkt No. 689-693 for the purpose of building a new commercial building, but this was only realized by his son from his first marriage, Georg Simon Baron von Sina , who ran his banking empire from there.
