Sissel Kyrkjebø (also Sissel , born June 24, 1969 in Bergen ) is a Norwegian singer ( soprano ).

Life

Sissel Kyrkjebø appeared in 1986 in the framework program of the Eurovision Song Contest in her hometown. In the same year her debut album Sissel came out and with over 400,000 copies it was the best-selling album in Norway until then. In 1987 the Christmas album Glade Jul was released , which even surpassed its debut with 600,000 records sold. In 1988 she took on the role of Maria von Trapp in the musical Sound of Music in Oslo, where she saw 110,000 visitors. She released the song Climb Ev'ry Mountain from this musical in 1989 on her third album Soria Moria . Like its two predecessors, this album also landed at number one on the Norwegian album charts. She also sang the part of Ariel in Disney's Ariel, the Mermaid in the Danish, Swedish and Norwegian versions.

In February 1994 she sang Se ilden lyse as an interpretation of the Olympic anthem for the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer and thus reached number one in the Norwegian singles charts. The song was later released in English as Fire in Your Heart in a duet with Plácido Domingo . To this day, Kyrkjebø has continued to work with Domingo on the two Christmas albums Christmas In Vienna III (1995) and Christmas in Moscow (2014). Kyrkjebø's first international album Gift of Love , including songs by and with Neil Sedaka ( Solitare , Breaking up Is Hard to Do ). In Norway, the album rose to number nine on the charts. She also recorded the album Innerst i sjelen with Scandinavian folk songs , which came back to number one on the Norwegian album charts. Placido Domingo invited her to Vienna at Christmas 1994 to give one of his annual Christmas in Vienna concerts with him and Charles Aznavour . The accompanying album reached number one in Norway.

In the summer of 1997, the film composer James Horner asked Sissel to record the vocals for the Titanic soundtrack . It can be heard particularly clearly on the piece Rose . The album sold 24 million times. However, the title track is not sung by Sissel, as Sony got involved in the production of the film and selected Celine Dion for this title track. Sissel toured the US with Irish group The Chieftains , appeared on David Letterman's Late Show and Carnegie Hall . In 1998 she had a Europe-wide hit called Prince Igor , a duet with the American rapper Warren G from the concept album The Rapsody Overture . This project combined classical singing with American rappers.

In November 2000 Sissel made her first solo album in seven years, All Good Things , which included ballads and up-tempo numbers. With the Norwegian Espen Lind she then sang the duet Where the Lost Ones Go , which he had composed and which was later covered by Sarah Brightman and Katherine Jenkins, among others . The album came in at number three in Norway, Denmark at number five and Sweden at number six. In December 2000 Sissel performed at the Nobel Peace Prize gala in Oslo and sang the ballads One Day and Weightless from her current album . In 2001 her first live album was released under the title In Symphony , on which she sang pop songs and also classical arias like Puccini's O mio babbino caro . The album reached number two in Norway, number three in Denmark and number eleven in Sweden. In 2002, an international version of All Good Things was published in the USA under the title Sissel and sold over 100,000 times in the first three months. She also sang as a duet partner of Placido Domingo on his album Sacred Songs in two arias.

On May 24, 2002, Sissel sang the song Lær Meg Å Kjenne on the occasion of the wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and Ari Behn . In the same year, a Sissel concert was filmed and broadcast by PBS in the US in March 2003. It was later released on DVD under the title Sissel in Concert . In December 2002 she sang again at the Nobel Peace Prize gala, Over the Rainbow and the duet The Prayer with Josh Groban.

In 2003 the Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel released the album Bryn Terfel Sings Favorites with Kyrkjebø as a duet partner on Schubert's Ave Maria . At the end of 2003 the single Gå inte förbi , a duet with the Swedish pop and musical interpreter Peter Jöback, was released and reached number six in the Swedish charts.

Sissel's second USA album My Heart was released in March 2004. It is a "classic crossover album" with arias such as Lascia ch'io pianga by Georg Friedrich Handel , film music by Ennio Morricone and two pop songs by Richard Marx, as well as the ballad Wait a While , written by Jon Lord von Deep Purple . The album reached number two in Sweden and Norway and number seven in Denmark. Vanity Fair can also be heard on the soundtrack of the film . At Howard Shore's request , Sissel took part in The Lord of the Rings Symphony Tour . She sang with a symphony orchestra and a choir of around 200 musicians. In October she performed at the temple concert, Ninna-ji Otobutai, in Japan and sang Pie Jesu , Sancta Maria and You Raise Me up .

In 2005 the album Nordisk Vinternatt was released with Scandinavian folk songs. The album came in at number two in Norway, in Sweden and Denmark at number five and six respectively on the album charts. It was also released including a concert DVD.

In 2006, Into Paradise was followed by another classic crossover album in which she interpreted songs by Mozart , Bach , Fauré , but also Like an Angel passing through by ABBA . In the same year she received the Order of St. Olav (knight 1st class) from the Norwegian king for her contribution as Norway's music ambassador. She was the youngest recipient of this award. In that year she also received the Spellemann Prize, Norway's most prestigious music prize for being “Norway's most respected artist”. Since this was a lifetime achievement award, she was again the youngest person to have received this award so far. With De Beste 1986-2006 came a double best-of album with 40 songs from 20 years. It also includes lesser-known songs like What Are We Made of? , a duet with Queen founder Brian May from the 1996 film The Adventures of Pinocchio , or My Tribute (to God be the Glory) , which she sang with the Oslo Gospel Choir in 1989.

In December 2006 she was invited as a soloist by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir . She sang in front of over 80,000 people at four concerts. For the 2007 Christmas season, the PBS recorded a concert by Sissel with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir entitled Spirit of the Season . The resulting CD landed at number one on the Billboard Classic Charts, number eight in Norway and was nominated for a Grammy. The DVD came out in September 2007. In 2007 she released another CD / DVD entitled Northern Light , a concert from Bergstaden Zirr, a 17th century church. She invited the tenor José Carreras as a guest . The CD reached number ten on the Billboard Classic Crossover Charts .

In 2009 another Christmas CD was released in Norway, Strålande Jul , a duet album with singer Odd Nordstoga . The album sold more than 300,000 copies in the first two months and was number one in Norway and number seven in Sweden.

In 2010 she released the album ... til deg ... ... (German: ... for you ... ) with Norwegian, Swedish and English lyrics. The next three years after the "til teg" tour she devoted most of the time to her family, apart from a few concerts.

In 2013 she was a special guest on Bryn Terfel's album "The Patriot" with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Private

In 1993 Sissel Kyrkjebø married the Danish singer and comedian Eddie Skoller , they have two daughters. In 2004 the marriage was divorced. On August 13, 2013, Kyrkjebø married the Norwegian tax expert Ernst Ravnaas. The couple live in the Frogner district of Oslo, but also spend a lot of time on the “Minde” estate near Hov / Søndre Land, which they bought in 2011, just under two hours' drive north of Oslo.
