The last five episodes aired in September and October 2019. The series was filmed in Budapest , mainly on the premises of the Mafilm studios, where both existing and newly constructed sets were used. Other locations were spread across Budapest and outside the city.

At the end of June 2020, it was announced that the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW is providing € 700,000 to support a film called The History of Mankind - slightly abbreviated , in which large parts of the sketch history team are participating.

content

In the 25 minutes of a program, various television skits are shown that parody historical events and personalities. These events are largely based on real historical figures, such as B. John F. Kennedy , William Shakespeare , Adolf Hitler , Martin Luther , Ferdinand Magellan or Napoleon , but also fictional characters. The individual skits are linked by ironic off- comments by Bastian Pastewka and cartoon animations in the style of Terry Gilliam . An integral part of the program is that the characters shown make commentary statements in front of a neutral background, similar to contemporary witnesses in real ZDF history documentaries.

There are recurring elements, for example historical figures such as Gaius Julius Caesar , Melchior or the first violinist of the on-board band of the Titanic are shown as the ancestors of the actor Klaus Kinski , as Max Giermann depicts them in the form of Kinski's infamous outbursts of anger, which, among other things, occur when filming Fitzcarraldo and Jesus Christ the Savior appeared at the recitation .

Matthias Matschke plays a Ludwig van Beethoven who plays modern music such as Jump , Engel or The Final Countdown on the piano and only fakes his deafness in the event of inconvenience. Antoine Monot, Jr. plays Popess Joan . Sketch History deliberately plays with anachronisms by placing modern phenomena such as quotas for women or internships in historical contexts.

The series shows, for example, Vikings in the circle of an “anonymous anti-alcoholic” meeting, angry citizens at the medieval Cologne cathedral building site, a witch burning as a musical , a John F. Kennedy driven by permanent sex addiction , Goebbels as a hand-made speaker , Götz von Berlichingen and his followers Today's understanding, grammatically incorrect Götz quote or officers who, despite ignorance of the causes and the current situation , cannot break off the Thirty Years War , as it only lasts 28 years and "Twenty-eight Years War" would sound "impossible".

reception

The concept and the quality of the program were received mixed.

"Here the curious is not turned into the absurd, as Monty Python has shown, but with a wooden mallet, what belongs to the canon of human history."

"Slapstick, but of quality class A. [...] Sketch History makes its own rhyme for people and events in world history and is thus much more entertaining than the truth."

“It's hard to believe: there is definitely no such funny, evil and black humor on German television. […] It is easy to overlook the program in the program, given the late broadcasting time and the relatively short duration. And that's a shame. The extremely loving equipment alone, which would do any historical film credit, allows credible historical epochs such as the Wild West or the ancient world to rise again. The effect is all the greater when the makers happily throw historical and current information together. [...] She also shows an intense sense of extremely black humor. And that on German television - you really have to see something like that to believe it. So cheerfully macabre and funny. [...] "
