In medicine, the term scleritis describes a condition in which the sclera (outer solid covering of the eyeball, "dermis") shows signs of inflammation .

The bradytrophic sclera is rarely affected, but can be affected by inflammatory processes from the outside ( conjunctiva and orbit ) as well as from the inside ( uvea ). Causal can u. a. Sarcoid , gout , rheumatic diseases and infections such as tuberculosis , syphilis or zoster , but in rare cases also metastases in septic processes.

A superficial inflammation of the dermis is known as episcleritis .
