Geography and traffic

The road in Skolkowo

Skolkowo is located around 20 km west of the city center of Moscow and two kilometers outside the outer Moscow motorway ring , which in this area coincides with the city limits of Moscow. Administratively, Skolkowo belongs to the municipality Novoiwanowskoje gorodskoje posselenije in the district ( Rajon ) Odintsowo . Its administrative center, the city of Odintsovo , is about six kilometers west of Skolkowo as the crow flies.

The towns of Nemtschinowo, Marfino and Saretschje border directly on Skolkowo. The former two together with Skolkowo and two other places form the Novoiwanowskoje urban district (Russian: Новоивановское городское поселение ), while Zarechye is an independent urban district.

The main street of Skolkowos is the Skolkower Chaussee ( Сколковское шоссе ), which connects the town with Moscow and has a junction with the motorway ring . The 867 Mosgortrans line bus runs regularly between the Kunzewskaya underground station on the one hand and Skolkowo and Nemtschinowo on the other .

history

The village of Skolkowo was first mentioned in the late 16th century. The place name possibly comes from the family name Skolkow of an early place owner. In the same century there was a wooden church in the village, which was dedicated to the birth of Christ . In the 17th century Skolkowo changed hands several times and in 1704, when it belonged to a member of the Menshikov family, there were 25 farms with a total population of 90 souls. Under Menshikov a new wooden church and a stone mansion were built there.

In 1765 the Church of the Nativity burned down and has not been rebuilt since. In 1890, under the last local owner before the Russian October Revolution , 202 inhabitants lived in Skolkowo.

In the 1960s, Skolkowo became a nearby suburb of Moscow as the Moscow city limits were extended to the motorway ring. In 1965 it became part of the newly founded Odintsovo Rajon, and in 2005 the Novoiwanowskoje district was formed within it.

In the 1990s and 2000s, numerous upper-class villas and apartment buildings were built in and around Skolkowo. Skolkowo is currently part of the " bacon belt " west of Moscow with land prices that are among the most expensive in the country.

economy

Since the beginning of 2010 there have been plans to build an internationally important research and industrial area in the immediate vicinity of Skolkowo, the concept of which is to be based on the American Silicon Valley . The project, which is so far new in Russia, is to be financed by the Russian state and with the help of private investors. Completion could take place between 2015 and 2018.

Also known is the private university Moscow Management School Skolkowo ( Московская школа управления "Сколково" ), which was founded in 2006 and whose campus east of Skolkowo was built according to the plans of the British architects Adjaye Associates .
