more details

The Slashdot effect or Slashdotting occurs when a previously little popular website from an IT - Online magazine as Slashdot or H is taken up and so a significant user onslaught begins within minutes to the website. This often leads to considerable data traffic being caused and the server temporarily no longer being able to answer individual requests or only being able to answer them very slowly. The site is then "geslashdottet" (English slashdotted ).

In German-speaking countries, the Heise effect ( “server was secret” ) is also used when a website is mentioned on heise online . Other non-IT online magazines (such as tagesschau.de , Spiegel Online or CNN ) can also generate similar data traffic if they mention a website whose server cannot cope with the onslaught.

Large websites that are served by a server farm usually have no problems with the increased data traffic. It is above all smaller individual servers that fall victim to a slash dot effect. Sometimes the Slashdot effect is jokingly compared to a DDoS attack. In order to reduce the rush to the affected pages, mirrors are offered by independent sites in the hope that readers will access the mirrors instead of the original site. Such projects are coordinated by Coral and MirrorDot .
