Slobozia ( Ukrainian , Russian Слободзея Slobodseja , Romanian Slobozia ) is a city on the Dniester River in southern Transnistria . It is the administrative capital of the Rajons named after it and has around 17,780 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005), most of whom are Moldovans and Russians .
The village was first mentioned at the end of the 17th century and has had official city status since 2002. Today's city goes back to the formerly independent villages Slobodseja Russkaja and Slobodseja Moldawskaja , which were merged into a single municipality in 1972. Historically, the northern part ( Moldavskaja ) was mainly inhabited by ethnic Moldovans , while the southern part ( Russkaja ) was inhabited by Russians. Both settlements had grown together in the course of the 20th century and the separation according to ethnic groups became blurred. Today's city center with town hall and most of the shops is located in the former Moldovan part of the settlement, but the southern, formerly Russian district also has its own town center.
