slrn is a text-based open source - newsreader , was originally designed for Unix-like operating systems and VMS was developed. It is now also available for other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and OS / 2 . It is released as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

slrn was written by John E. Davis and published in 1994. The abbreviation stands for "S-Lang Read News". S-Lang is the scripting language on which slrn is based and with the help of which it can be configured in many ways.
