The Smithsonian Magazine is an official journal provided by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC will be issued. The first edition was published in 1970.
history
Edward K. Thompson , a retired writer for LIFE magazine , was asked by S. Dillon Ripley , a former director of the Smithsonian Institute, to produce a magazine covering subjects "that are of interest to the Smithsonian [institute]." could and should be of interest. "
Thomson later recalled that his philosophy for the magazine was “to stir minds already receptive to curiosity. It would deal with the story that is relevant to the present. It would present technology in its richest facets [...]. It would look into the future by reporting social progress and science and technology. Technical questions [...] would be made understandable by experienced authors. "
In 1973 the magazine made a profit for the first time. By 1974 the circulation had almost quadrupled to 635,000 copies and in 1975 it reached a circulation of one million. 1980 Thompson was replaced by Don Moser , also a former life journalist. Among these, a circulation of 2 million was reached. He was replaced by Carey Winfrey after his retirement in 2001 .
