Snakeskin is a music project by the musician Tilo Wolff , who is best known for his band Lacrimosa .

background

Snakeskin was founded in 2004 by Wolff. In the same year the first Snakeskin album "Music For The Lost" was released. The music shows influences from electro , rock , classical music and other genres. Wolff states that the reason for founding the music project is to want to realize musical ideas that could not be implemented with Lacrimosa :

“Lacrimosa lives from the stipulation that the music is the setting of a lyric. I didn't want to break this rule, but I still wanted to make music that didn't initially follow a text. This is how Snakeskin came about. "

- Tilo Wolff : Interview with Industrie-Musik.de, April 22nd, 2007

The distorted and alienated vocals are a stylistic device of Snakeskin . The fact that the texts are difficult or even impossible to understand is part of the Snakeskin concept. In the booklet can also be seen only excerpts of the texts. This "moving into the background" of the text's meaning is in clear contrast to Lacrimosa and illustrates the different characters of the projects. From the second album “Canta'Tronic” the concept is softened a bit, Wolff's voice is less distorted and a soprano participates in Kerstin Doelle . On the third album "Tunes for my Santiméa" you can hear another singer, Carina Böhmer , who gives the album a poppy touch. The fourth album "Medusa's Spell" is accompanied by the Swiss band Kartagon .

In addition to the music, Snakeskin also differs from Lacrimosa in that Wolff relies on a completely different appearance.

Wolff says about the choice and meaning of the project name Snakeskin :

“On the one hand, it is the symbol for the second skin that you remove and this skin is not simply a waste product. [...] Actually a kind of fingerprint that you can strip off. This is also a bit of a symbol for this Snakeskin project. It's still the same person in it, but it's a skin that you can put on or strip off without affecting what's in that skin. "

Trivia

In October 2006, the release of the second album "Canta'Tronic" had to be postponed for a week because the truck that had loaded the entire edition of the first press of the album for Germany and Austria had an accident.
