Kind of Like Love is a romantic comedy film starring Ashton Kutcher (Oliver) and Amanda Peet (Emily) from 2005 .

The film is essentially about the relationship between the two main characters Oliver and Emily, which has developed over many years.

action

Oliver, who lives with his parents and has the dream of starting his own company, happens to meet Emily at the Los Angeles airport , who has just broken up with her boyfriend and is quite desperate. Their eyes meet for a long time, but neither of them does anything. During the flight to New York , Emily takes the initiative, and the two grow closer in the airplane toilet. After landing, only Oliver shows interest in getting to know each other better, Emily keeps rocking him. The reasons are, in their opinion, three mistakes:

  1. She had to take the first step.
  2. He doesn't play the guitar.
  3. He has the wrong zodiac sign.

But finally Emily lets himself in for a drink. After discussing Oliver's future, they make an agreement: In six years' time, Emily should contact him to see if he has a house, a wife and a successful career. Wager is $ 50. Then they roam the streets and Emily takes photos with Oliver's camera until the film is full. Since Oliver is a little upset about this, Emily takes the full film and buys him a new one before they split up again.

Contrary to the agreement, Emily contacts Oliver three years later because her boyfriend broke up with her and she needs someone to accompany her to a New Year's party at short notice. Oliver agrees and even helps her make her ex-boyfriend jealous. After a night out, Emily wakes up alone in Oliver's apartment. He had to go to San Francisco for professional reasons , did not want to wake her and therefore left without saying goodbye. All Emily remains is his camera, which he left behind as a present.

Two years later: Oliver's company is flourishing and he lives with his wife in a beautiful house. But since his job is more important to him than his wife, she leaves him. In a hasty action, he goes to Los Angeles to see Emily, who is now a photographer. They go out and meet Emily's ex-boyfriend there. In his arms Gina, a friend of Emily. United in their lovesickness, they both drive out of town, sing along to cuddle songs on the radio and numb their heartache with alcohol. The trip ends in a national park, where both of them lie on the hood, talk to each other and look at the starry sky. Emily has her camera with her and convinces Oliver to pose together naked for a photo in front of the night sky. Excited by this situation, the two end up in the back seat of the car.

Back in town, they say goodbye again, and Oliver confesses to Emily that he still has feelings for his wife. Emily thinks that's okay; she also met someone.

The next day, Oliver flies to New York on business. There he gets a surprise call from Emily, who asks him to visit her mother's grave and put flowers there.

Another year later: Oliver's company has gone bankrupt and he has a growing desire to be with Emily again. He travels to Los Angeles and confesses his love to Emily while playing guitar, but her wedding to another man is imminent. With a heavy heart he gives it up and moves back to his parents.

A few days before her wedding, Emily happens to find the film she had filmed when she first met Oliver. She develops it and finds that he had already photographed her before she came to see him in the airplane toilet. So he had taken the first step and even learned to play the guitar for her. She realizes that Oliver is the right one for her, whereupon she separates from her future husband.

She drives to Oliver's parents' house after she found out by chance that a wedding was being held there. When she sees Oliver in a suit, she assumes it is his wedding and wants to leave the house in a hurry. But he stops her because it is only about his sister's wedding. Then Oliver and Emily kiss.

Reviews

Peter Travers compared the film in Rolling Stone from April 21, 2005 with the romantic comedies Harry and Sally and Because There Are You , in part with the films Before Sunrise and Before Sunset . He said the film would be difficult to bear even for fans of Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher.

"In search of unconventional ideas, the tense love film urges its protagonists to infantile teasing, which of course hardly makes the unbelievable story any more interesting."

Awards

Ashton Kutcher won the Teen Choice Award in 2005 for singing the song I'll Be There for You (originally by Bon Jovi ) . The film was nominated for awards in three other categories, including Amanda Peet for Best Comedy Actress .
