You are a member of the Social Democratic Party of Europe and, in Milan Kučan, you appointed the first President of Slovenia . In 2007, her candidate Danilo Türk won the election for Slovenian President. From 2008 to 2012, the SD and its then party leader Borut Pahor provided the Slovenian prime minister.

In the early parliamentary election on July 13, 2014 , the SD received 6 percent of the vote. In the parliamentary election on December 6, 2011 it was 10.5 percent, in the election on September 21, 2008 it was 30.5 percent. history

In 1989 there were disputes in the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia over resolutions of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia, in which the right to secession from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia had been established.

On January 23, 1990, the Slovenian delegation, led by Milan Kučan, left the party congress of the Union of Communists and shortly thereafter renamed itself the “Party of Democratic Renewal” (Stranka democične prenove) . In the first multi-party elections in Slovenia in April 1990, the SDP achieved the highest percentage of votes with 17.28%. Since the DEMOS parties received a majority with 54% of the vote and the Christian Democrat Lojze Peterle formed the government, the SDP went into opposition.

At the parliamentary elections at the end of 1992 after the failure of the Peterle government, the first after independence from Yugoslavia, the SDP, which had since been renamed “ Socialdemokratska prenova ”, formed an electoral alliance with several other parties: the Labor Party ( Delavska stranka ), The Social Democratic Union ( Socialdemokratska unija / SDU ), as well as parts of the Socialist Party ( Socialistična stranka Slovenije ) and the Democratic Pensioners' Party ( Demokratična stranka upokojencev / DeSUS ). This electoral alliance was named Združena lista (United List).

In the parliamentary elections in December 1992, the United List reached 13.58% and formed a grand coalition with the Liberal Democrats (LDS) and the Slovenian Christian Democrats (SKD), where they provided four ministers (economy; labor, family and social affairs; science; culture ).

Shortly after the election success, a new party was created under the name United List of Social Democrats ( Združena lista socialnih Demokratieov / ZLSD ) by uniting the SDP, Workers' Party, SDU and parts of the Socialist Party and DeSUS. Janez Kocijančič became the first chairman .

In January 1996 the Social Democrats resigned from the government because of disputes over social policy, particularly over the pension issue.

In March 1997, the 3rd party congress in Ljubljana elected Borut Pahor as chairman, who was re-elected in 2001 in Koper .

After its election success in October 2000, the ZLSD formed a government on November 15, 2000 with the Liberal Democrats, the Alliance of People's Party and Christian Democrats (SLS + SKD) and the Pensioners' Party. As the second strongest partner, the ZLSD has three ministries (Labor, Family and Social Affairs; Culture; Interior).

In the 2004 elections, as in 2000, the ZLSD became the third strongest party, but went into opposition, and Janez Janša of the SDS formed the new government with the New Slovenia (emerged from the Christian Democrats) and DESUS.

At its 5th party congress on April 2, 2005 in Ljubljana, the social democratic party renamed itself to “Social Democrats” ( Socialni Demokratie, SD ). By transferring other parliamentarians on March 20, 2007, the SD faction became the strongest opposition faction. In the parliamentary elections on September 21, 2008, the SD emerged as the strongest force with 30.6 percent of the vote. On November 7, 2008, its chairman, Borut Pahor, was elected to the post of Prime Minister by the State Assembly (Državni zbor) .

Pahor's government failed in September 2011, and the State Assembly expressed its mistrust . In early parliamentary elections in December 2011, the SD lost two thirds of its votes and became only the third strongest force in the State Assembly.
