Sollefteå is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västernorrlands län and the historic province of Ångermanland . The main town of the municipality is Sollefteå .

Other localities are Junsele , Långsele , Näsåker , Österforse , Ramsele and others. The national roads 87 and 90 and the railway lines Härnösand - Långsele and Ånge - Vännäs run through the municipality .

geography

The municipality extends 130 kilometers along the Ångermanälven from north-west to south-east. At Sollefteå the Faxälven flows into the Ångermanälven. The municipality, which lies in the foothills of the Scandinavian Mountains , is mountainous with deeply cut river valleys and numerous lakes. About 80 percent of the area is forested and there are extensive wetlands in the southwest of the municipality.

economy

As a traditional branch of business, forestry still plays an important role in the municipality's economic life. Electricity generation (16 hydropower plants - 15 percent of Sweden's hydropower production) is also a major employer. There are also medium-sized and smaller industrial companies in various sectors. After the garrison was dissolved in 2000, some state authorities (or departments) were relocated to Sollefteå.

Attractions

Nämforsen (37 kilometers from Sollefteå) and Junsele (75 kilometers from Sollefteå) are northwest of Sollefteå on Ångermanälven . Nämforsen is one of the largest rapids in Ångermanälven, today it has been converted into a hydroelectric power station. Below the power station is an area with rock carvings from the Stone and Bronze Ages. With over 1,700 scratches, it is one of the largest in Northern Europe. On the southern bank of the river there is also a former Stone Age settlement that has been reconstructed and can be visited.

Junsele is a tourist town. One of Ångermanland's largest open-air museums is in Junsele. A music and art week is held annually in summer. The Edens by nature reserve and the Hamptjärnsberget zoo are nearby .

Ramsele is located on Faxälven, about 60 kilometers north of Sollefteå. The old church of Ramsele on the bank of the river is from the 13th century. But above all the banks of the Faxälven near Ramsele (nature reserve) are unique and a well-known biotope for beavers .
