features

Construction of the Imago

The brownish Imago of Somatochlora elongata measures 52-62 mm, of which 41 to 48 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively large within the genus. In terms of color, the very slim abdomen is black with greenish reflections. The yellow pattern typical of the genus is limited to two extensive spots on the lower half of the first three segments . These are also swollen. Both the genital lobe of the male and the upper side of the cerci are covered with hairs.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is green on the sides and bronze-colored towards the front. There are yellow stripes on the side. Overall, the pterothorax is covered with small white hairs. The hind wings measure 34 to 38 millimeters. The wings are brownish. The wing veins and the wing mark ( pterostigma ) are also brownish.

On the face the labrum is bright greenish black. There is a wide yellowish band above, but it is not closed on the back of the head. Above that, the head is bronze-greenish. On the labrum there are also two yellow points at the base, some of which are also fused into a line. The back of the head ( occiput ) is brown.

Construction of the larva

The 23.0 to 23.4 millimeter large exuvia is light brown and has black dots in the area between the segments. The hind wing sheath extends to the middle of the sixth segment. The abdomen is 14.5 to 15.0 millimeters long and at the level of the sixth segment - the widest point - 8.0 to 9.25 millimeters wide. Dorsal hooks are found on segments four with nine and lateral spikes are found on the eighth and ninth segments. The back edges of the segments are trimmed with hairs.

The femora of the rear pair of legs measure eight millimeters, the posterior tibia measure around nine millimeters.

On the six millimeter wide head, the sides of the head run outwards from the concave occiput to behind the eyes. Both the occiput and the sides of the head are slightly hairy. The joint of the lower lip ( labium ) extends to the base of the mesonotum . On the Mentum , which is roughly as long as it is wide, there are nine small teeth, with the two closest apical . In addition, the mentum has eleven to twelve hairs, the first eight being narrower and longer than the remaining hairs.

Way of life

Representatives of the species were observed along sunny rivers whose moor like shallower sites with Gagel bushes ( gale Myrica ) and Spier bushes ( Spiraea salicifolia ) are covered. The males flew up and down along the shallow spots at heights of around 50 centimeters.
