features

Construction of the Imago

The dark colored Imago of Somatochlora forcipata measures 43-51 mm, of which 34 to 39 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal omitted), which is relatively small within the genus. The abdomen is dark to black on the first two segments, then greenish. The first segments are also very hairy and appear swollen. The pattern that is common in the genus is composed as follows: On the first segment there are two small spots on each side. There is an apical ring on the second segment . Finally, on either side of the third segment, there are two spots and dots on the sides of segments four with eight.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is hairy and dark-red-brown with the typical bluish greenish shimmer. There are also two light oval spots on the sides. The hind wings measure 29 to 33 millimeters. The wings are transparent with black veins. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is yellow. The legs are black except for the underside of the lighter, anterior femora .

On the face the labrum is black, the postclypeus is black and yellow. The forehead ( frons ) is dark brown and shining on the top metallic green. Their sides are yellowish. The hairy back of the head ( occiput ) is black.

Construction of the larva

The dark brown, hairy larva measures between 19 and 20 millimeters and is 6.6 to 7.1 millimeters wide at the widest point, the fourth to fifth abdominal segment. There are no dorsal hooks and lateral thorns are only found on the ninth segment.

The femora of the rear pair of legs measure 5 to 5.5 millimeters, the rear tibia measure 5.75 to 6 millimeters.

The head reaches lengths of around six millimeters. The sides of the head merge obliquely into the slightly concave occiput. In the space between the two feelers there is a line of hairs. The lower lip ( labium ) is comparatively small and the mentum just extends to the coxae of the middle pair of legs. There are twelve to fifteen mental hairs on the somewhat longer than broad mentum.

Spread and time of flight

The species is common in the northern United States and Canada . It flies between May and September and lives in small rivers and pools in moorland .
