The imago of Somatochlora linearis measures 58-68 mm, of which 44 to 55 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively large within the genus. In contrast to other emerald dragonflies, this species has no stripes on the pterothorax. The long legs are black. The hind wings measure 39 to 47 millimeters. The wings are see-through with a black Costa loader .

In the yellowish face, the area of ​​the labrum is somewhat darker. The forehead ( frons ) and the crown ( vertex ) are metallic blue. The back of the head ( occiput ) is brown.

Similar species

The species Somatochlora ensigera is very similar to Somatochlora linearis . A differentiation is possible through the size and through the much less pronounced pattern.
