Somatochlora provocans is a species of dragonfly from the family of the falcon dragonflies (Corduliidae), which belong to the large dragonflies (Anisoptera).

features

The blackish Imago of Somatochlora provocans measures 53-56 mm, of which 37 to 43 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively large within the genus. In terms of color, the long, slender abdomen, as usual in the genus, is dark and shiny green and has a yellow pattern. There is a ring-shaped mark on the bald spot on the second segment, in contrast to the abdomen, which is otherwise hairy, especially on the base . In addition, there are three points on this segment, which in the females have grown together to form an upside-down Y. On the third segment there is an upper and a lower triangle on the sides. Finally, there are two rings on the eighth and ninth segments.

While the front of the pterothorax is brownish, the sides are greenish. There are sometimes two yellow stripes on the Mesepisternum . Another yellow line is just behind the spiral . The 33 to 37 millimeter long wings are transparent. Only the costa is yellow-brown. The wing mark ( pterostigma ) is brown. The legs are black except for the lighter base. The keel on the posterior femur , typical of the genus, is whitish.

The yellowish face becomes metallic green towards the top. The occiput and vertex, on the other hand, are brown.

Spread and time of flight

The species is particularly common in the eastern United States . It flies between June and September.
