Von-der-Heydt summer house

The summer house Von-der-Heydt is a preserved villa, with the address " Auf der Königshöhe ", in today's Wuppertal district of Elberfeld . It is placed under protection as an architectural monument.

history

August Freiherr von der Heydt (1851–1929) and his wife Selma von der Heydt (née Haarhaus) acquired the front building between 1870 and 1880, which at that time was free-standing between meadows and fields on Königshöhe . In 1885 he had the quarry stone building converted into a summer house in the typical style of the late 19th century . Another extension with a second tower, this time influenced by Art Nouveau , took place in 1907. The building retained its eclecticism despite the variety of stylesElements combined with rural motifs always have a special look. Attached to the stately summer residence was an excursion restaurant that was very popular at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The Königshöhe was surrounded by forest areas that today belong to the Burgholz State Forest .

The art patron von der Heydt owned numerous important paintings, which were also hanging in this villa. Today they are part of the collection of the Von der Heydt Museum . Numerous artists such as Friedrich von Schennis or Rainer Maria Rilke were often guests of the von der Heydt family . After Rilke's sponsor Karl von der Heydt died in 1922, his house on the Mäuerchen and the villa on Königshöhe were sold to the city of Elberfeld for 500 gold marks in 1924  . August and Selma von der Heydt retired to their villa in Godesberg . Eduard von der Heydt already lived in Amsterdam and Zandvoort .

The restaurant was run by the Diebel family from 1921 to the 1950s, until they gave up for lack of successors. After the front building had been vacant for a long time, the artists Rolf Isken and Peter Baum renovated the summer residence and set up an open printing workshop for etching and lithography there under the name "Verlag & Werkstatt Königshöhe" in 1978. The model was the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. The villa quickly became an art and communication center. In the early 1980s, the artists Udo Meyer and RME Streuf installed themselves in the back of the house . Artists like Enric Rabasseda , Wolfgang Schmitz , Rudolf Schoofs , Jürgen Störr , Gerd Aretz , Wil Sensen and Anthony Canham frequented the workshop for exchange and artistic creation. Furthermore, exhibitions were held frequently and regularly. Around 1988 the city of Wuppertal sold the villa to RME Streuf. On August 21, 1984 the villa and the coach house were placed under monument protection.
