Sonae (abbreviation for Sociedade Nacional de Estratificados ) is a Portuguese listed holding company , the largest private employer and, with 11% of national VAT revenue, the largest taxpayer in Portugal. The conglomerate is based in Maia near Porto . It is included in the Portuguese share index PSI 20 .

General

Sonae was founded in 1959 by Afonso Pinto Magalhães and is now one of the most important Portuguese corporations. Pinto Magalhães, among other things also founder of the bank Banco Pinto Magalhães , had transferred the management of the company to Fábio Lemos in the years after the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 1974. In 1982 Belmiro de Azevedo were offered 16% of the share capital of Sonae by Pinto Magalhães. Following the death of Pinto Magalhães and legal battles with the family, Azevedo was able to gain complete control of the company. Since March 20, 2007, Paulo de Azevedo has been the head of Sonae in place of his father Belmiro de Azevedo.

Sonae operates in the following countries: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece and Romania; also in Brazil, Angola and Colombia. In Germany, Sonae operates the Alexa Shopping Center in Berlin , the Loop5 Shopping Center in Weiterstadt and the Hofgarten Solingen in Solingen and wants to expand further. The current project is currently the Neue Mitte Garbsen in Garbsen . The company is also responsible for the management of the Münster-Arkaden in Münster .

Organizations

The central administrative body is the Sonae holding company. The widely branched trading company operates with its subsidiaries in the two main divisions of shopping centers and telecommunications. The subholdings are:

  • Sonae Sierra (Shopping Center Management and Development)
  • Sonaecom (telecommunications, mobile communications, internet services)
  • Sonae SR (Specialized Retail: Loop, Modalfa, SportZone, Vobis, Words, Words Mobile, Zippy)
  • Sonae MC (Grocery Retail: Bom Bocado, Book.it, Continente, Continente Bom Dia, Continente Modelo , Continente Ice, Well's)
  • Sonae RP (Retail Real Estate )
  • Sonae Investimentos (Investment Management)

For Sonae Group includes portugal widely known brands, such as supermarket chains Modelo Continente, the electronics chain's words, as well as a number of news magazines and newspapers ( Público , etc.) and the Portuguese mobile operator Optimus . The company also owns numerous shopping centers across Portugal, for example Centro Colombo (Lisbon), Via Catarina (Porto), Madeira Shopping (Funchal).
