Sonja Ferlov Mancoba

Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (born November 1, 1911 in Copenhagen , † December 17, 1985 in Paris ) was a Danish painter and sculptor . She lived and worked in Copenhagen and Paris.

life and work

Sonja Ferlov Mancoba studied painting under Bizzie Høyer (1888–1971) at Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen. She continued her studies with Aksel Jørgensen (1983–1957) at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. During her studies in 1931 she met Ejler Bille , Richard Mortensen and Gertrud Vasegaard.

In 1935 Sonja Ferlov Mancoba became interested in sculpture and took part in her first exhibition “Den surrealistiske Udstilling” in Odense . The following year she traveled to Paris and moved into a studio in the same building as Alberto Giacometti , with whom she became friends. In 1938 she met the South African sculptor Ernest Mancoba and married him in 1940. She studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . In many contexts she appeared with the artist group CoBrA , but did not take part in their joint exhibitions. She was a member of the artist groups Linien and Høst .

Ferlov Mancoba's parents were friends with Carl Kjersmeir, who owned a collection of more than 1500 African figures and masks. Sonja Ferlov introduced Asger Jorn and other artists from her environment to Carl Kjersmeir and his collection.

Ferlov Mancoba's sculptures are very independent, made of clay and plaster, and inspired by African and Mexican figures and masks that she has known since she was a child.
