Sonny and Cher was an active American pop duo from 1964 to 1977, which consisted of Sonny Bono and his wife Cher and has sold more than 80 million records to date.

Her singles I Got You Babe (1965), Little Man (1966) and The Beat Goes On (1967) were successful . In 1965, five hits by Sonny and Cher were simultaneously in the top 20 of the international charts.

The two have had several television shows, including The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (1971) and The Sonny and Cher Show (1976).

In 1987, the two surprisingly performed their earlier hit I Got You Babe on David Letterman's Late Night Show . This was their last appearance together.

Private

Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946 in California and Sonny Bono, born Salvatore Bono in Detroit on February 16, 1935 to Italian immigrants, were married in 1969. On March 4, 1969, their child Chastity Bono was born. Bono has other children from his first marriage.

In 1975 the marriage ended in divorce. Sonny Bono died on January 5, 1998 in a skiing accident.
