Sooriyamoolai ( Tamil : சூரியமூலை Cūriyamūlai [ ˈsuːrijəˌmuːlɛi̯ ]) is a village in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the Kaveri Delta around four kilometers northeast of Kanjanur . The river Palavar , an estuary of the Kaveri, flows north of the village . Administratively, Sooriyamoolai belongs to the Taluk Thiruvidaimarudur of the Thanjavur district . The population is around 1400 (2011 census).

Sooriyamoolai is the birthplace of the eminent Tamil philologist UV Swaminatha Iyer (1855-1942). This is where his mother's parents' house was, where she had retired to give birth to the child. However, Swaminatha Iyer always considered the village of Uthamadhanapuram to be his hometown , where his family on his father's side came from.

The name Sooriyamoolai means "corner of the sun" in Tamil. According to Swaminatha Iyer, the place takes his name because it is northeast of Kanjanur and the northeast was traditionally referred to as "the corner of the sun". The Sanskrit equivalent of the name is Suryakoti . The village temple is therefore dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva under the name Suryakotiswarar ("Lord of Suryakoti").
