South Andaman or English South Andaman Island is the southernmost of the three large main islands of the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean . Politically, the island belongs to the Indian Andaman and Nicobar Union territory .

South Andaman Island is located immediately south of Middle Andaman Island , from which it is only separated by a strait a few hundred meters wide, and north of Rutland Island . The island is 93 km long, up to 31 km wide and has an area of ​​almost 1348 km². It is less mountainous than the islands in the north of the Andaman Islands and in the Koiob it reaches a height of 456.6 m above sea level. The largest city on the island is Port Blair on the southeast coast with more than 100,000 inhabitants, which is also the capital of the Union Territory. As of the 2001 census, the island had a total of 181,949 inhabitants.

On the west coast of South Andaman there are still a few hundred Jarawa , an indigenous Andaman ethnic group who speak a language from the Andaman language group, also called Jarawa . The vast majority of the population, however, are mainly ethnic groups and their descendants who have immigrated from the Indian mainland.
