The South Boston Speedway , also called "SoBo", is a short track oval outside South Boston in the state of Virginia in the United States , which is used for NASCAR races, among other things .
history
In August 1957, the South Boston Speedway opened. At that time it was still a dirt track route that offered seats for 1,000 spectators. The first race took place on August 10, 1957, and the first NASCAR race took place on April 16, 1960. It was a 50 lap modified show race, which was won by Johnny Roberts from Baltimore. The prize money was $ 500. In the same year, the NASCAR Grand National Series also drove on the track for the first time. Junior Johnson won the race on July 8, 1960. Five years after it opened, the track length was increased to 0.357 miles (0.575 kilometers), the track was paved and a concrete wall was built around the track. Today's Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series was last held in South Boston in 1971. In late 1972, South Boston Speedway was removed from the NASCAR calendar entirely. In 1977 the oval was resumed by NASCAR. In 1994 the length of the route was increased slightly. The route length was 0.4 miles (0.644 kilometers), which is the current length of the oval. The Xfinity Series was hosted on this oval until 2000 and the Camping World Truck Series until 2003. These days, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races at South Boston Speedway, among others .
