history

Sozial.Geschichte Online is a follow-up periodical to the Sozial.Geschichte published by Peter Lang Verlag . Journal for Historical Analysis of the 20th and 21st Centuries (2003-2007),which previously appeared under the name 1999. Journal for Social History of the 20th and 21st Century (1986–2002; ISSN  0930-9977 ).

From 1986 to 2014 the magazine was published by the Foundation for Social History of the 20th Century in Bremen. In January 2015 - after a previous expansion of the editorial team - the newly founded Association for Social History of the 20th and 21st Centuries took over the editing .

The profile of social history was significantly shaped by Karl Heinz Roth and Angelika Ebbinghaus . Both contributed to the broader reception of operaism and socio-historical approaches of the New Left in the Federal Republic through their collaboration with the magazine Autonomie.Materialien gegen die Fabrikgesellschaft (1975–1985) and with the publication The “Other” Workers' Movement (1974) . Similar to E. P. Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm in Great Britain, they are less interested in a history of party-political and trade union workers' organizations than in an analysis of the organizing processes of the labor movement and other social movements . The journal took up methodological approaches to global labor history at an early stage , such as those represented by the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam and Marcel van der Linden , who is also closely linked to the journal through the Foundation for Social History of the 20th Century (see special issue 9/2012 to Marcel van der Linden).

The magazine is mainly concerned with:

  • the history and post-history of National Socialism and the related politics of remembrance and commemoration
  • the history of work, employment relationships and labor disputes, with conflicts over urban development
  • World economic crisis (s) and the associated social movements and crisis protests
  • Migration and migrant struggles
  • Feminism and Feminist Movements Worldwide
  • Employment relationships in the PRC
  • Right-to-town movement
  • the history of the (long) 1968s, left and new social movements
  • Marxism and anarchism .

The focus is on a global view of historical and current issues and debates. For example, Sozial.Geschichte Online documented in detail the developments and protests in the context of the economic crisis of 2008/9 and the events of the so-called Arabellion .

The journal also takes into account non-academic social history research and theoretical work. It is aimed at both a specialist audience and readers with an interest in history.

The individual issues are divided into a research and discussion section, as well as the current events section, which refers to current debates and topics. The review section is characterized by detailed book reviews from the above and other subject areas. The articles appear in German or English.

The editorial team consists of a group of twelve scientists.
