Special forces

The special forces are subordinate to the Mando de Operaciones Especiales (Eng. "High Command for Special Operations"), the Army High Command for Special Operations, a large group at brigad level that leads all special units of the Army.

Grupos de Operaciones Especiales (GOE)

Grupos de Operaciones Especiales (GOE) of the Spanish Army

The GOE , also known as boinas verdes ("green berets "), is the army's primary special unit and is divided into groups and companies . They are trained primarily for non-conventional warfare and fighting deep behind enemy lines. There are currently three groups, GOE Valencia III , GOE Tercio de Ampurdán IV , GOE Maderal Oleaga XIX (part of the Spanish Legion ), all stationed in Alicante .

The last time the GOE was in the spotlight of the media was when they stormed the island of the same name during the Parsley War and took it over without bloodshed (2002).

Compañía de Esquiadores Escaladores

The Compañía de Esquiadores Escaladores (German: Skiers and Mountaineers Company) is a special unit of the light infantry of the Spanish mountain troop Brigada de Cazadores de Montaña "Aragón I" and is stationed in Huesca . They are trained for non-conventional warfare and fighting behind enemy lines in the high mountains and in extreme cold.

Elite units

Brigada de Infantería Ligera Paracaidista (BRIPAC, paratroopers )

In addition to infantry training, the soldiers of the Brigada de Infantería Ligera Paracaidista also have additional military training that enables them to land by parachute jump . Due to the special requirements of this type of service, extensive weapon and shooting training as well as special courses under different climatic and operational conditions are part of the training program. Paratroopers can fight for a limited time on their own in the depths behind enemy lines as a hunting battle. A large proportion of paratroopers take courses as lone fighters and in house-to-house combat .

Spanish Legion

The Spanish Legion (Spanish Legión Española ), the former Spanish Foreign Legion, is an elite military unit of the Spanish Armed Forces. It is especially used along the Moroccan coast in the Plazas de Soberanía . The Grupo de Operaciones Especiales "Maderal Oleaga" XIX is, however, unlike the rest of the Legion, classified as a special operations unit and is directly subordinate to the Mando de Operaciones Especiale (Army High Command for Special Operations).

The Legión Española was founded as the Spanish counterpart to the French Foreign Legion with the name Tercio de Extranjeros , but is no longer a Foreign Legion today. Before Spain had to give up its African territories, the Legion was stationed in Spanish Sahara and Spanish Morocco .

Today the Spanish Legion as an elite unit of the light takes infantry frequently UN - peacekeeping , u. a. in Bosnia , Croatia , Angola , Nicaragua , Haiti , El Salvador and Guatemala .

Regulares

The Regulares ( Fuerzas Regulares Indígenas , in German: Regular Indigenous Forces ) are a light infantry unit and today, like the Legion, are mainly stationed in the Plazas de soberanía along the Moroccan coast. But you also occasionally take part in international peace missions. Originally, the Regulares were recruited from the native population of Spanish Morocco , now mostly from the inhabitants of Ceuta and Melilla .

Eurocorps

The Eurocorps is a multinational military association of the states Germany , France , Belgium , Spain and Luxembourg , which is open to all member states of the Western European Union (WEU) and the states associated with the WEU. The corps provides forces for EU and NATO missions, including a. for the rapid reaction force of NATO. Spain is involved through the 1st Land Forces Command (formerly: División de Infantería Mecanizada Brunete n. 1 ) with the 10th Mechanized Infantry Brigade "Guzmán el Bueno", the 11th Mechanized Infantry Brigade "Extremadura" and the 12th Armored Brigade "Guadarrama" .

New acquisitions

Pizarro VCZAP pioneer tank

In the course of the second delivery phase of the Pizarro armored personnel carriers , the Spanish army decided to design 36 of the vehicles ordered as pioneer tanks. The hull of the vehículo de combate de zapadores (pioneer armored personnel carrier, VCZAP) should, unlike the rest of the Pizarro of the Spanish army, be based on the ASCOD 2 that prevailed in the tender for the British Army's Future Rapid Effect System. The Spanish VCZAP are u. a. be equipped with a remote-controlled weapon station of the Samson Mini type as well as a clearing blade and cable winch. The new vehicles are expected to run from 2020

8 × 8 armored vehicles

To replace the already-down in the years BMR Radtransport- and the VEC M1 Radspähpanzer, the Spanish army is planning to procure around 1,000 8 × 8 Radpanzern in three delivery phases based on the Piranha V . The Spanish subsidiary of GDELS , Santa Bárbara Sistemas , is to take over the production. In the first phase, 348 tanks are to be delivered between 2019 and 2025.
