history

On December 12th, 1812, the state-municipal pawnshop was founded, the business premises of which were in the town hall . In 1816 the savings bank was opened, which formed a unit with the pawnshop in terms of administrative law, personnel and space. Their clientele was limited to "craftsmen, servants and day laborers and people of this class", who were to be given the opportunity to invest their small savings securely and with interest. The name of the institute at that time was “Städtische Leihhaus- und Aussparniß-Koff”.

In 1840 the savings fund was opened to all classes of the population, and the savings book was introduced instead of the previous promissory notes . In 1860 the statutes stipulated that parts of the surplus would be distributed to the city for charitable purposes. In 1880 the name was changed to “Städtische Spar- und Pfandleihkasse”.

In 1906 the pawnshop moved to a new building in Schwanenstrasse (today's city archive). In the following year, 1907, the Sparkasse moved from the town hall to the neighboring building, Karl-Friedrich-Straße 8 (today's Marktplatz branch).

In 1923 the inflation ruined private savings company was taken over. Shortly afterwards, in 1925, the first acceptance points were opened in shops (predecessors of the later city branches).

In 1932 the company was renamed again, now to “Städtische Sparkasse”. In the following years, several takeovers were carried out in the course of incorporations: in 1935 the community savings bank Knielingen , 1939 the district savings bank Durlach and 1944 the community savings bank Grötzingen . In 1941 the pawn shop was closed.

In 1957 the newly built savings bank building was opened on Europaplatz . The main office was relocated from Marktplatz to Europaplatz, and the savings bank premises on Marktplatz were reopened as a branch in 1960 .

In 1966 the punch card system was converted to electronic data processing and the mobile branch was introduced. After the name was changed to "Stadtsparkasse Karlsruhe" in 1973, the Sparkasse became a district savings bank in 1978 when the municipality of Pfinztal joined the guarantee association with the city, and the name was changed to "Sparkasse Karlsruhe". In 1982 the community of Weingarten also joined the guarantor association.

In 1979 the Sparkassenstiftung was founded to promote outstanding scientific work at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) . In 1985 the "Foundation for the Promotion of Young People of the Sparkasse Karlsruhe", today's youth foundation of the Sparkasse Karlsruhe, and in 1993 the cultural foundation of the Sparkasse Karlsruhe were established.

In 1980 the first self-service area was set up in the main office (3 x S station).

In the last few decades several mergers have been carried out: in 1993 with the Sparkasse Malsch, in 2003 with the Sparkasse Graben-Neudorf / Philippsburg, and in 2010 with the Sparkasse Ettlingen to form the Sparkasse Karlsruhe Ettlingen.

The new building on Europaplatz was inaugurated in 2007. In 2009 the foundation "GUTES TUN - Donor Network of Sparkasse Karlsruhe" was founded, and the Sparkasse customer center on Europaplatz was inaugurated after the renovation of the existing building.

On January 1, 2017, the Sparkasse Karlsruhe Ettlingen took on its old name again and is only called Sparkasse Karlsruhe.
