Culture and sights

Burial mound group

Not far from Speele, north and north-west of the Wißmannshof estate, about 19 burial mounds were found in large areas in the forest area on a plateau between 220 m and 320 m. Investigations of the site by aerial projection suggest that, based on numerous, inconspicuous small mounds in the cleared arable area around Gut Wißmannshof, a larger population can be detected, the total number of which exceeds 80 graves. The size of the graves is similar to those found in the immediate vicinity in Spiekershausen, they vary between 5 m and 11 m in diameter and have a height of 0.20 m to 1 m. The graves are dated to the earlier Bronze Age with reservation , this is also the result of the discovery of a polished stone hammer and a chisel, which came to light when the area around Gut Wißmannshof was reclaimed in the 19th century.

Commercial port

The trading port built in the Middle Ages was not profitable in the 15th century and silted up due to lack of use. Today it is only known as the Lower Saxony Corner.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows three salt crystals and a fish. The 3 salt crystals indicate the salt springs on the Fulda, which were formerly used as a saltworks . The fish stands for river fishing in the Fulda, which was once important.
