Sphairon is a supplier and manufacturer of products in the field of telecommunications and network technology (including DSL , ISDN , WLAN , WLL and Internet telephony ). The headquarters are in Bautzen , where the company's development is concentrated.

History of the company

The company emerged from the VEB Fernmeldewerk Bautzen , founded in 1948 , into which the AEG production of carrier frequency systems, which began in 1941, was incorporated . In 1990 the company was converted into RFT Fernmeldewerk Bautzen GmbH . In 1991, Philips Communication Industry AG, Nuremberg, acquired the company and renamed it to Philips Fernmeldewerk Bautzen GmbH , and in 1996 to Philips Multimedia Network Systems GmbH with a new product focus. In 2000, Professional Multimedia Network Systems GmbH (PMNS) took over the Philips activities in Bautzen.

Another part of the company goes back to Krone AG, which was founded in Berlin in 1928 and which was involved in the expansion of fiber optic networks in the new federal states from 1992 to 1996. From 1996 the business field Wireless Local Loop (WLL) was taken over by Jenoptik Communication GmbH in connection with the takeover of Krone AG by Jenoptik AG. In 2000 PMNS bought part of the wireless business. In 2003, the PMNS Group was finally renamed Sphairon Access Systems GmbH .

On December 17, 2009, Sphairon Access Systems GmbH filed for insolvency at the Dresden District Court under AZ 531 IN 3208/09. A complaint was filed against the two managing directors Uwe Bartsch and Mohamed Al-Sady in January 2010 on suspicion of delaying bankruptcy . You should have filed for bankruptcy in mid-November 2009.

Due to the participation of the Indian investment company Sandalwood, there was a transfer of operations in March 2010 according to § 613 BGB, which preserved around 200 jobs at the Bautzen location. The insolvent Sphairon Access Systems GmbH iI is being handled by the lawyer Bettina Schmudde (White & Case Insolvenz GbR). With the transfer of operations, the company was renamed to Sphairon Technologies GmbH on April 1, 2010.

As of December 31, 2010, the company employed 193 people in development and production.

At the beginning of 2012, Sphairon gave up its production at the Bautzen location and is now having various partners manufacture. The number of employees fell from 200 to 90. In May 2013, 60 people were still employed.

On March 14, 2013, the company filed for insolvency due to insolvency. The number of employees had been reduced to around 60 by this time. The bankruptcy proceedings were opened on April 30, 2013.

In May 2013, the takeover by the Taiwanese network equipment supplier ZyXEL was announced. He took over 30 of the 60 Sphairon employees. The terminated employees should, however, be employed for a transitional period of a maximum of nine months.
