history
When the 4th city fortifications were built in 1342, the old road to Bümpliz , which turned a little south, became part of the city's main axis. It passed the Heiliggeistspital, which was founded shortly before 1228, and was therefore called nüwe instead of zem holy spirit as early as 1344 and Spitalgasse for the first time before 1359. The Christoffelturm , built between 1344 and 1346, closed off the city to the west with the city wall. It was demolished in 1865, as were the bulwarks that had become superfluous. This is how square was created and Bern lost the last city gate. Until 1909 there was a stately old house at the upper end of Spitalgasse, right next to the Heiliggeistkirche , writes Rudolf von Tavel in his childhood memories, it formed the corner between Spitalgasse and the outer bulwark, which was no longer one . It was his parents' house and the von Tavel family lived on the upper floors. On the ground floor, a Mr. Edler ran a watchmaker's shop, next to it the honest master Schilt a hairdresser and in the annex, his father Binder ran a confectionery , Tavel continues. Today the PKZ house is located there and the back yard is accessed through the Schweizerhof Passage. In the 18th century, the square-like extension of Spitalgasse in front of the Church of the Holy Spirit was called Plätzli near the gate . The department store chain Loeb is of central importance for the recent history of Spitalgasse . It goes back to a fashion store at Spitalgasse 32, which opened on September 9, 1881 and was moved to the current building at Spitalgasse 47/49 in 1899. The so-called Loebegge at the entrance of this building is the most popular meeting place in the city of Bern.
The Pfeiferbrunnen has been in Spitalgasse since 1638 . The neo-Gothic fountain in front of the Christoffelturm was moved to Bümpliz.
Like the other main streets, Spitalgasse is a pedestrian zone, but is increasingly being used by several tram and bus routes.
