The Eggenberg sports and wellness pool , also known as the oyster , is located in the Eggenberg district of Graz and is an important water sports facility in Styria.

prehistory

In 1972/73 the "Eggenberg indoor and outdoor swimming pool" was built on the site, which was primarily geared towards school and swimming sports. Operated by the leisure facilities of Grazer Stadtwerke AG since 1985 , there was a need for renovation since the mid-1990s. In 1996 a renovation and conversion concept was drawn up, which was postponed due to a lack of funds. In 2002, the renovation concept was discarded in favor of a new building, as this was viewed as more economical in the long term. In 2006 the City Council of Graz issued a new tender; The design by the architectural firm Fasch & Fuchs prevailed in the competition. After 35 years of operation, the old bath, already in a desolate condition, was torn down and construction of the new bath started in 2009, which was completed in 2011.

architecture

The nickname “Auster” comes from the plans of the architects, who describe it as follows: “Like a slightly opened oyster that opens generously to the open area to flush the intimate interior with light and nature, a shell contains all the bathing and wellness facilities. “In 2012, the plan was awarded the Geramb thank you sign for good building.

Furnishing

A covered 50 m pool with a diving platform with a 5 m diving tower and diving boards for synchronized jumping competitions can be used in conjunction with the spectator stand for competitions. Both short and long track competitions are possible in the pool. In the open area there is a 50 m outdoor pool, which is not suitable for competitions due to its shallow depth. Competitions are held regularly in the 5 m deep diving pool with a 10 m diving tower. The oyster also houses a 2,000 m² spa area.

Sports

The sports pool is home to various swimming clubs such as ATUS Graz, USC Graz and the Styrian swimming performance center. In addition to the water polo club WBV Graz, the fins swimmers of FC Graz and the diving enthusiasts of the GAK , the underwater rugby team of the STC Graz trains in the area of the diving tower. The pool is a regular venue for international competitions: 2012 the youth world championship in fin swimming, an annual international swimming meeting with qualification status, the ATUS Graz Trophy and an annual international underwater rugby tournament. In the summer of 2019, the Underwater Rugby World Cup will take place in the sports pool.
