Squash World Team Championship 2005

The 20th World Team Championship for Men ( English 2005 Men's World Team Squash Championships ) was held from 8th to 14th December, 2005 Islamabad , Pakistan instead. A total of 22 teams competed.

After 1995 and 1997, England won the World Cup for the third time in history. In the group phase, the team won against South Africa , Kuwait and Austria without losing a game and initially benefited from a bye in the final round. In the quarter-finals, they also defeated the Welsh team without losing a game , before they could prevail against Canada in the semifinals 2-1. Peter Nicol defeated Graham Ryding before James Willstrop lost straight to Jonathon Power . Nick Matthewsecured the English with a smooth 3-0 win over Shahier Razik the final. Opponents in the final were the Egyptian team . After winning the title in 1999 and reaching the finals in 2001, this was the third time in a world championship final. They prevailed in Group B like their opponents England without losing a game, with 3-0 each they defeated Germany , New Zealand and Iran . In the final round, Egypt also received a bye and then defeated Malaysia 2-0. In the semi-finals, they beat France 2-1 . Karim Darwish gave Egypt a 3-0 lead against Grégory Gaultier before Thierry Lincou equalized with a 3-1 against Amr Shabana . Mohammed Abbas prevailed 3-1 against Renan Lavigne in the decisive game . In the final, Egypt had no chance against England. James Willstrop defeated Amr Shabana 3-1, before Peter Nicol safely won 3-0 against Mohammed Abbas. The third game was no longer played. In the game for third place, France beat Canada 2-1. Thierry Lincou and Grégory Gaultier defeated Jonathon Power and Graham Ryding, Shahier Razik won against Renan Lavigne.

Defending champion Australia finished in 5th place. The team around Anthony Ricketts , Stewart Boswell , Joseph Kneipp and Cameron Pilley was somewhat surprisingly eliminated against Canada in the quarter-finals.

The German team finished the tournament in 10th place. In the first round of the final round she lost 2-1 to Wales, Stefan Leifels lost the third game 3-2 to Alex Gough . This was followed by a 3-0 win over India and a 1-2 defeat against South Africa. In addition to Leifels, Simon Rösner , Simon Baker and Patrick Gässler played . Austria took 22nd and last place. After finishing fourth in Group A, Austria lost 3-0 in the consolation round against Spain and also suffered a 3-0 defeat in the game for 21st place against Kuwait. It played Aqeel Rehman , Jakob Dirnberger , Stefan Brauneis and Andreas Freudensprung . A Swiss team did not compete.

Experts blamed the security situation in Pakistan, among other things, for the low number of participants compared to previous World Championships.

mode

The participating teams were drawn into six groups according to their placement, the group size varied between three and four teams. Within the groups, the game was played in round robin mode ; the two best-placed teams reached the final round, which was played in the knockout system . The winners of groups A, B, C and D received a bye in the first round of the final round. In these four of the total of six groups, the four top-seeded teams were each set as the group head. At the tournament all places were played out.

All teams consisted of a minimum of three and a maximum of four players who had to be reported in the order of their skill level. Three individual games were played per encounter. A team won if its players could win two of the individual games. The order in which the individual games were played was independent of the order in which the players entered.
