Sridevi (born August 13, 1963 in Sivakasi , Madras , † February 24, 2018 in Dubai ) was an Indian film actress . She appeared in about 300 films in various Indian film industries and was one of the most successful Indian actresses in commercial Hindi film of the 1980s and 1990s.

Life

She was born as Shree Amma Yanger in what was then the southern Indian state of Madras (now Tamil Nadu). The mother tongue of the father Ayyappan was Tamil and that of the mother Rajeswari Telugu . Sridevi's closer mother tongue was Tamil, but she grew up bilingual.

She began her career as a child actress in South Indian regional productions. Her first film was AP Nagarajan's Kandan Karunai (1967); a Tamil production with Sivaji Ganesan , Gemini Ganesan and J. Jayalalithaa in which she portrayed the deity Murugan as a child. Already in 1976 in K. Balachander's Moondru Mudichu and in 1977 in the debut film by director Bharathiraja Pathinaru Vayathinile , she played alongside the actors Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth . In Telugu she drew attention to herself in particular with her leading role in K. Raghavendra Raos Vetagadu (1979) alongside NT Rama Raos , one of the most important actors in the film industry in Andhra Pradesh .

With Kamal Haasan, she formed one of the most successful screen couples in South Indian cinema in 23 films , including Balu Mahendras Moondram Pirai (1982). The Tamil film about a teacher rescuing a mentally confused woman from a brothel was re-filmed as a Hindi remake in 1983 by the same director with the same actors under the title Sadma . The 1983 film Himmatwala by K. Raghavendra Rao marks Sridevi's breakthrough in Hindi film . She starred in this social drama together with Jeetendra , who often became her film partner . From then on, mainly Hindi productions shaped Sridevis' filmmaking.

With the female lead role of a journalist in Shekhar Kapur's Mr. India (1987), she achieved a solo success; the film song she portrayed, Hawa Hawaii , was featured in Mira Nairs Salaam Bombay! quoted. Alongside Chiranjeevi in K. Raghavendra Rao's Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari (1990) and alongside Venkatesh Daggubati in Ram Gopal Varma's Kshana Kshanam (1991), Sridevi appeared again in notable Telugu films. A career highlight was her leading role in 1991 in the Hindi drama Lamhe by Yash Chopra , for which she received, among other things, a Filmfare Award for best leading actress. Sridevi was the highest paid actress in Indian film during the 1980s and 1990s until Madhuri Dixit surpassed her. In 1992 she played with Amitabh Bachchan in Khuda Gawah by Mukul Anand and with Anil Kapoor in the most expensive Indian film to date, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja by Satish Kaushik , which, however, became a commercial flop.

After her marriage to the film producer Boney Kapoor , a brother of the actors Sanjay and Anil Kapoor, and the birth of two daughters, she retired from film work in 1997. She hosted a fortnightly television show and appeared in television commercials. In 2012 she made a successful comeback with the film English for Beginners . For this she received the Stardust Award in 2013.

Sridevi served on the Board of Directors of the Asian Academy of Film and Television .

She died in February 2018 at the age of 54 when she was visiting a wedding in Dubai with her family and lost consciousness while drunk in a bathtub in a hotel and drowned.
