The Städtische Galerie im Park Viersen (often called Galerie im Park ) is a representative villa in Viersen used for exhibitions with a valuable collection of prints , surrounded by the Viersen sculpture park .

building

The building was erected in 1869 as a representative factory owner's villa in the neo-renaissance style and in 1899 came into the possession of the Kaiser's coffee shop , which had its headquarters in Viersen . The Wilhelminian-style villa has been owned by the city of Viersen since 1973 . It was declared a monument in 1976, redesigned in 1980 and opened in 1981 as the municipal gallery in the park for exhibitions and cultural events. It is located between the bus station and the main entrance of the 'Kreishaus Viersen'.

Collections

The Galerie im Park contains several collections, an important one of which is the graphic collection started in the early 1960s by the then City Director Karl-Heinz van Kaldenkerken . The more than 1000 sheets from the end of the 15th century to the present include, for example, valuable single sheets by Rembrandt , Rubens , Albrecht Dürer , Marc Chagall , Picasso ( La Poule ), Braque , Fernand Léger and Joan Miró , graphic works by the German Expressionists ( e.g. by Lyonel Feininger , Kokoschka , Paul Klee and Emil Nolde ), a collection of Rhenish artists and contemporary art from purchases from the respective exhibitions. The collection also includes 40 photographs by August Sander .

Exhibitions

The first exhibition in 1981 showed works by the realist Dieter Asmus ; Over the years various art movements have been shown, e.g. B. kinetic art by Günter Haese (2007). The artists with outstanding exhibitions, for which extensive accompanying publications were often published, include, for example, Hans Brög (1983), Christoph Meckel (1987), Hermann Schmitz (1987), Henry Moore (1989), Erwin Heerich (1990), Fritz Koch ( 1993), Tony Cragg (1996), Lothar-Günther Buchheim (1997), Heinz Lanser (1998), Werner Schriefers (1999), Anatol (2002), Matta (2002), Georg Ettl (2003), Ewald Mataré (2004) , ZEBRA (2005), Martin Lersch (2006), Günter Haese (2007), Herbert Zangs (2008) and Wang Du (2010).

Others

In addition to readings by authors and concerts, the Städtische Galerie offers a museum educational program with guided tours for school classes and other groups.
