The city ​​museum Medebach is dedicated to the historical and cultural development of Medebach and its districts. For the central location , the development from an arable town to a place particularly characterized by tourism is shown.

In 1981 a home and history association was formed. Especially on his initiative, the municipal museum was founded in 1989 under municipal sponsorship. This was set up in a historic town house from the 18th century (Oberstraße 26).

Focus

The permanent exhibition begins chronologically with finds of Prehistory and sets the time of the early Middle Ages . The museum in Medebach is next to the Sauerland Museum one of the few museums in Hochsauerlandkreis that objects facing the Prehistory.

This is followed by the history of the office and city of Medebach as well as the local judiciary. Religious life is represented by the parish church of St. Petrus , the Küstelberg and Glindfeld monasteries, and the Martini brotherhood. In this example, the funeral system in times of emergency and epidemic is discussed.

One focus is dedicated to the time as an agricultural town. Evidence of the city core archeology and desert archeology are shown. This is followed by a department for handicrafts and agriculture. In particular, forestry is also presented. It is remarkable that the museum takes on the Sauerland traveling trade .

The museum is devoted to life in the 19th century and the humble approaches to industrialization. Among other things, the Ewers textile factory is discussed. The conclusion was the development in the 20th century ( First World War , Weimar Republic , time of National Socialism ) and the emergence of new employment opportunities. The development of tourism and winter sports is mentioned, for example. This makes it one of the few museums in the region that deals with this economically important aspect.

One of the notable exhibits is an armillary sphere by Caspar Vopelius from the 16th century.

Since 2012, a section of the Steinhelle – Medebach small railway on a scale of 1 to 45 can be viewed in the former Hanseatic Hall.
