Historical part

The St. Alexander Church is a Catholic church in Schmallenberg . Parish patron is St. Alexander . It belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

The listed building consists of an older part from the 13th century facing east. Today remains of the baroque furnishings have been preserved, including a small Vespers picture from the 2nd half of the 15th century. In 1905, after the demolition of the old tower, the extension was built in the neo-Romanesque style based on designs by the Aachen cathedral master builder Joseph Buchkremer . The solemn consecration by the Archbishop of Paderborn did not take place until 1911. The altar in the Nazarene style is dedicated to the city patron St. Valentin .

In 1955 the interior was renovated. The church tower had to be demolished again in 1996. On September 12, 2004 the new church tower was inaugurated. The tower, designed by the Cologne architect Hans Schilling , is 50 meters high and is made of concrete clad with Belgian greywacke . Its construction costs were 2.5 million euros. After an exterior renovation, the interior renovation of the church began in July 2012. The renovation of the interior costs 1.413 million euros.

The parish has 4,300 members.

organ

The organ was built in 1944 by the organ builder Klais (Bonn). The instrument has been slightly changed several times, and most recently extensively overhauled in 2012–2013 and partially restored to its original state. Today it has 36 registers on three manuals and a pedal . The playing and stop actions are electric.
