St. Barbara (Essen-Byfang)
The Church of St. Barbara is a Roman Catholic church building that characterizes the town in the Byfang district of Essen . The church, named after Saint Barbara of Nicomedia , patroness of miners, belongs to the parish of St. Josef Essen Ruhr Peninsula in the Essen city dean of the diocese of Essen . The church stands in a slightly elevated position on the Nöckersberger Sattel.
history
Byfang originally belonged to the parish of Niederwenigern , which meant a long journey for the believers in Byfang. Therefore a chapel association was founded in 1898, the aim of which was to build a church in Byfang. In 1902 a local restaurateur donated the building site. But it was not until 1928 that the building of the church began. On August 12, 1929, the church building was inaugurated. In 1985 the parish of St. Barbara got a community home, and in 1996 a new building was added. Since April 1, 2008, the St. Barbara Church has belonged to the parish of St. Joseph as a branch church.
description
The church building, oriented from the southwest to the northeast, consists of a rectangular nave and a small choir attached to the northeast , on the right side of which a square tower with a pyramid roof rises. It is a hall church , with a steep gable roof is covered. The church was completely built from Ruhr sandstone , which a quarry owner provided free of charge. The entrance facade is largely unadorned - three archways suggest three gates, but there are only entrances in the right and left arches, and in the middle arch there is a window that illuminates the baptismal font inside. There is a simple rose window in the gable of the facade .
Glass art
The design of the church windows is remarkable. The five arched windows on both sides of the nave are divided into small colored rectangles, the colors of which run differently from blue to yellow to brown / red for each window. This design can be seen as an example of glass art in the 20th century. The windows presumably date from the year the church was completed, the artist is unknown. The three stained glass windows were probably made at the same time, depicting the church patron Barbara on the left, Christ as King in the middle, and Saint Ludgerus on the right as a contrast, very representational in the 19th century style . The window behind the baptismal font and the glazing of the rosette date from more recent times, around 1966, both free compositions whose author is also unknown. The windows are at the research center for glass painting of the 20th century. documented in Mönchengladbach.
Peal
The three-part bell was cast in 1947 by the Bochum Association .
