history

Parish Church of St. Boniface

The construction of a new church in Niederbieber became necessary because the old branch church on Melsbacher Straße, which was built in late Gothic style in 1905/06 and consecrated on September 30, 1906, had become too small. Niederbieber still belonged to St. Matthias . That changed in 1947 when Niederbieber was raised to the status of an independent vicarie . 1008 souls were counted at that time. In 1951 St. Boniface became an independent parish. At the end of the 1950s, the decision to build a new church was finally made. There were now 2200 members of the community. The implementation of the construction project turned out to be difficult. There were different views on the architectural design. Finally, the Cologne cathedral builder Willy Weyres was commissioned with the planning. The groundbreaking ceremony and the laying of the foundation stone took place on May 14, 1961. In the same year, on December 8th, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated. The new church was put into use for the first time on White Sunday 1963. The church was in use for a whole year before it was consecrated on June 17, 1964 by Auxiliary Bishop Bernhard Stein in a solemn pontifical mass. In May 1965, the four large bells could be consecrated and installed in the bell tower to ring for the first time on the occasion of the first confirmation in the new parish church on May 29, 1965. In 1986 renovations were carried out inside the church and in 1987 the new Meyer organ with 20 registers was built.
