St. Burchard

The Catholic parish church of St. Burchard is a listed church building in Oedingen , a district of the municipality of Lennestadt , in the Olpe district , in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The historian Manfred Wolf (along with Alfred Hömberg) dates the construction of a parish church in Oedingen to the time after the turn of the millennium. At this time, reports of the existence of a cemetery for Oedingen, which usually included a church, were reported. At that time, a patron saint was often named only a few years after his death or canonization ; the patron saint of the Oedingen church St. Burchard was canonized in 984/90.

The naming of the Oedingen church as a parish church is already documented in the Westphalian document book in 1292, whereas in the "liber valoris" (directory of all parish churches of the Archdiocese of Cologne around 1300) the church is only referred to as "Capella". Although the church in Oedingen was probably never officially given the title parish church, the historian Wolf assumes in the Oedinger Chronik that it was always in possession of parish rights due to the normative force of the factual.

The west tower from the 13th century is still preserved from the original church. The current building is a classical , spacious nave with a well-structured seven-axis extension. It was built in 1832. Large arched windows structure the walls. The choir has just closed, the sacristy is to the east. The church has a flat ceiling inside and two rows kannelierender pillars on which the ceiling beams rest in three ships divided. Most of the building material came from the monastery church of the Grafschaft monastery .

The extensive renovation of the church in 2016-2017 mainly comprised the following areas: repainting of the church interior, revision of the pews, renewal of the heating system, redesign of the choir and chancel, renovation of the organ, renewal of the electrical system, checking and repair of the bells and renewal of the stairs to the church. The costs of the entire measure are estimated at approx. Estimated 560,000 euros.

Furnishing

  • Gothic statue of St. Jacobus from around 1520, probably by the carver Petrus von Kolshusen . Local publications indicate that the current statue is a replica. The original has been in the Diocesan Museum in Paderborn since 1977.
  • Four pulpit evangelists and a Madonna from the baroque interior of the old church, created in the Attendorn workshop of Johann Sasse .
  • High altar with relief of the church patron St. Burchard and two wooden reliefs "The Wedding at Cana " and "The Wonderful Multiplication of Bread" in the choir room (work by the artist Peter Schneider from Eslohe around 1890)
  • A cross (15th century?) With a hollow body found during work in 1931 , which today adorns the cross above the altar. In the head of the body there was a note in Latin from 1732 about a restoration that had been carried out.
