The St. Elisabeth Church (Slovak Kostol svätej Alžbety ) is a Roman Catholic church in Bratislava , Slovakia . It is consecrated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary . Due to the color of the facade with a blue majolica mosaic , the church is also known as the Blue Church .

location

The church is located on Bezručova ulica (German Raneyss-Gasse ) number 4 in the old town of the Slovak capital.

architecture

The single-nave church was built from 1909 to 1913 according to plans by Ödön Lechner , which were built between 1903 and 1904, in the so-called secession style. Curved forms typical of the Hungarian Art Nouveau dominate . Lechner also designed the neighboring grammar school, the chapel of which the church initially served, and the parish.

The floor plan of the building is oval. There is a cylindrical church tower at the front. An initially planned dome over the nave was not implemented. Instead, a barrel vault was created , which is crowned by a steep hipped roof. The roof is covered with glazed tiles and decorated with decorations that also serve to structure the building.

The main and side entrances are framed by romanized double columns, spanned by arches that appear oriental. There are also other pillars on the windows.

The facade was originally designed in softer pastel tones . The building was later given its characteristic blue color. A line of blue wall tiles and a wavy ribbon encircle the building. There is a round mosaic above the entrance, which depicts the wonder of roses .

Furnishing

The interior of the church is richly decorated with pictures. On the altar there is a picture of St. Elizabeth giving gifts to the poor and beggars. Emperor Franz Josef I had Alois Rigele create a relief carved out of white Carrara marble for the church of his murdered wife Elisabeth in a praying posture. It was later removed and is now in the rectory .

A model of the church is located in the Mini-Europe facility in Brussels and represents Slovakia there.
