history

St. Florian Monastery

The history of the St. Florian Monastery in St. Florian near Linz goes back to the early Christian burial place of the martyr Florian von Lorch (304). The baroque building erected by Carlo Carlone and Jakob Prandtauer is one of the most magnificent monuments of architecture in Austria. The existence of the Boys Choir Institute has been documented since 1071, when the Augustinian Canons took over the monastery. In Anton Bruckner's time there were only three to four boys who recited the mass that had been rehearsed the day before every morning.

Until a few decades ago, the choir boys were almost exclusively responsible for creating church music in the monastery. The first concert tours abroad were undertaken under Hans Bachl (musical direction) and Prefect Josef Leitner (Konviktsdirektor).

Many musicians have emerged from the ranks of the choir boys; the most famous is Anton Bruckner, whose name is inextricably linked with St. Florian. The tenor Kurt Azesberger , who has performed in many opera houses and concert halls around the world, also comes from the ranks of the boys' choir.

In order to expand the repertoire of the boys' choir, the male choir was founded in 1989. It consists mostly of former choir boys who are continuing their vocal training or who have continued their vocational training and who are also sometimes active in other renowned ensembles. For the vocal training and further education of the members of this choir there are u. a. a cooperation with the Vocal Academy of the Province of Upper Austria.

school

The monastery has not run a private school for around 50 years. The "interns" live in the boarding school, where they usually have the opportunity to drive home every other weekend, usually from Saturday afternoon / afternoon to Sunday evening, although there is also the possibility to spend the entire weekend in the Konvikt. The "external" are those who mostly live in the immediate vicinity. Both groups usually attend the new St. Florian Middle School, which has had a class specially designed for them since 1991.

Concerts all over the world

From the 1990s onwards, the St. Florian Boys 'Choir became better known among boys' choirs thanks to their travels around the world. The boys' choir toured Australia (1995), South America (1996, 2000 and 2004), Japan (1987, 1990, 1993, 1997), USA / Canada (1999, 2003, 2006 and 2014), South Africa (1998 and 2002), Thailand / India (2005), Mexico (2007, 2017 and 2018), China (2008, 2016 and 2018), the United Arab Emirates (2009) and South Africa (2010).
