The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is a listed church building in Schwaney , a district of the Altenbeken community in the Paderborn district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

A pastor was first recorded in 1313. The previous church fell victim to a large village fire in 1895.

The large neo-Gothic basilica made of sandstone blocks with a choir in the 5/8 end was built in sandstone from 1896 to 1898 under the direction of Lambert von Fisenne . It was inaugurated on October 26, 1898. The tower stands in the west, the walls are divided by tracery windows. The side windows show the eight Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount . Views of the village and references to the founder of the window can be found in two windows. A ribbed vault with ring-shaped keystones was drawn into the elongated, clear interior . The interior is 40 m long and 20 m wide. The vault height in the central nave is 14 m. The vault is of a light, calm color scheme; color accents are set by red, blue and green patterns.

Auxiliary Bishop Augustinus Gockel consecrated the parish church on October 26, 1898. The relics of St. Martyr's Restitutus and St. Eutrophia were locked in the high altar. The third Sunday in October was set as the consecration day.

The church was renovated outside in the early 1990s and inside in 1999.
