The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius in Ahrweiler in northern Rhineland-Palatinate is the oldest hall church in the Rhineland .

history

Ahrweiler once belonged to the Prüm Abbey . This, under Abbot Gottfried von Prüm, had the church built in the 13th century (laying of the foundation stone in 1269) and sent Benedictine monks from Prüm to Ahrweiler as pastors. After the secularization and dissolution of the Prüm Abbey by Napoleon , the pastors were no longer appointed by the Prüm abbot, but by the bishop. The parish has belonged to the Trier diocese since 1824 .

Architecture and equipment

Exterior

The Gothic church has three aisles and is divided by buttresses. The masonry consists of plastered quarry stone. The central nave does not protrude beyond the aisles, so that the classification as a basilica or hall church is not clearly successful. The nave consists of four bays. The built-in octagonal tower made of tuff cuboid and trachyte has three storeys from the roof approach and is completed by a gable wreath and pointed helmet. The latter is the work of the Trier cathedral builder Wilhelm Schmitz . Between 1899 and 1912 he significantly renovated and redesigned the Ahrweiler Laurentiuskirche. The nave is four bays long, each bay on each side has a hipped roof. This is followed by an inclined side choir.

Interior

The side choirs and the main choir are bounded by five sides of an octagon. The galleries are three bays long and dim the light in the aisles. Strong round pillars support the ribbed vault. The interior is 44.20 m long and 20.80 m wide. The top of the ribbed vault is 14.40 m.

The furnishings include a late Gothic baptismal font, the crescent moon Madonna in the Marienkapelle, a monstrance that was created around 1400, and a Gothic sacrament shrine from 1481. The choir is completed by a wrought iron communion bench from the 18th century, the Way of the Cross was only acquired in 1906.

The frescoes from the 15th century, discovered in 1903 during restorations, leave the strongest impression. B. Biblical scenes (baptism of Jesus and the Last Judgment), saints, a Corpus Christi processions from 1918, and the consecration of the church show.

organ

View of the organ

The history of the organs goes back to the 16th century. Today's organ was built in 1991 by the organ building company Fischer + Krämer (Endingen). It replaced an instrument that had been built in 1956 by the organ building company Johannes Klais (Bonn), partly with pipe material from the predecessor organ by Stahlhut (1903). In today's organ, some stops have been reused. The baroque case dates from the 16th century. The slider chest instrument has 47 registers, including 24 new registers, on three manuals and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric. In 2004 the instrument was expanded to include the solo movement with three high pressure registers, which was placed on the side gallery.

Bells

The ringing consists of nine bells , the smallest of which hang in the roof turret over the crossing and the rest in the main tower. When the original bells melted during the fire in 1689, Johannes Bourlet from Jülich cast four bells in 1694. Two smaller bells were added in the baroque period. In order to restore the original stock, the Eifeler bell foundry Mark from Brockscheid cast three bells in 2000 , which were donated by the St. Sebastianus Schützengesellschaft (Sebastianusglocke) , the church choir (Cäcilienglocke) and an Ahrweiler family (Seligenglocke) . The ringing order dictates the dinging . It corresponds to the once widespread in the Rhineland Beiern . On special occasions, such as Christmas mass , Corpus Christi and Easter time, people ring.
