The Church of St. Margareta (Slovak Kostol svätej Margity Antiochijskej ) in Kopčany is the oldest church in Slovakia . It is located in western Slovakia, right on the border with the Czech Republic on the Morava River .

It is the only surviving church in the Great Moravian Empire .

construction

The church, dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch , is approximately 9 m × 5 m in size.

history

It was built in the 9th century. It is located two kilometers from the extensive Mikulčice -Vlady settlement complex, the presumed power center of the Great Moravian Empire until around 879.

In the 13th century, renovations took place in the Gothic style. In 1329 the Church of St. Margareta was first mentioned in writing. It was used as a church until the 18th century.

Archaeological investigations took place in 1964 and 1994. In 2004, three graves and jewelry from the time of the Great Moravian Empire were recovered from further research. Since 1995 the church has been a national cultural heritage of Slovakia.
