history

South side of the Church of St. Severin

The church goes back to a pre-Romanesque predecessor, which St. Severin himself had built with a monastery there. Remnants of the foundations of an older church were found during excavations in 1976. It was probably dedicated to John the Baptist .

During the reign of the Ottonians , a larger church was built, the masonry of which has been preserved in parts to this day. This makes the Severinskirche the oldest masonry church in Passau.

At the time of the early church organization in the Middle Ages, the parishes of St. Weihflorian and Münzkirchen were separated from the parish of St. Severin and made independent, but Schardenberg and Wernstein remained subordinate to the inner city parish .

The Inn Bridge was built around 1145 and the St. Aegidien Hospital connected to it was built near the Innstadt . In order to finance the Innbrücke, Spital and Spitalkirche, St. Aegidien was awarded the income of the parishes of St. Severin and Münzkirchen, in 1182 the parish of St. Severin with the "Innbruckamt" responsible for the administration of the Innbrücke was formally incorporated into St. Aegidien Hospital. Since then, the “Innbruckamt” has also administered the parishes incorporated into the hospital, which were to be allocated by the respective “Bruck pastor”. In addition to St. Severin with Schardenberg and Wernstein, these also included the parishes of St. Weihflorian , Kellberg , Hauzenberg , Kopfing , Münzkirchen and Tettenweis .

Soon after the incorporation of St. Severin, the seat of this parish became the hospital church of St. Aegidien / St. Gilgen relocated. From 1182 to 1653, the church and parish of St. Severin also bore the name St. Aegidien / St. Gilgen. With the parish office in St. Aegidien / St. Gilgen was associated with the office of "Innbruck and Infirmary Master". Konrad II ordered around 1250 that the administration of the hospital and the “Innbruckamt” should henceforth be entrusted to a canon of the Passau cathedral chapter as benefice .

The nave of St. Severin was widened again in the late Romanesque period. The late Gothic choir and tower were added in 1476.

In and around the church there are old tombstones from the 13th to 19th centuries as well as a Roman memorial stone for the customs officer Faustianus from the 3rd century AD under the gallery .

Interior of St. Severin

In 1787 the seat of the parish in the city center was moved from St. Severin to St. Gertraud , since 1968 St. Gertraud has also been an official parish church. However, the parish of Passau-Innstadt retained the patronage of St. Severin.

Today the St. Severin branch church serves as the cemetery church for the parish of Passau-Innstadt. In addition, the student services of the Catholic university community took place here. The cemetery around the church is one of the oldest in the German cultural area.
